Life or Death? The Presidential Election

This column was written prior to the 2004 presidential election, in which George Bush was seeking a second term and John Kerry was seeking to become the new president.

Due to age or illness, there may be two, and as many as four, Supreme Court Justices retiring within the next four years.

For that reason the next president could be in a position nominate enough new Justices to tip the balance of power between pro-abortion and anti-abortion and set the tone for our children, and grandchildren as well.

If new Justices who believe in life are appointed, Roe v. Wade could be overturned. On the other hand, if new Justices are appointed who are pro-abortion - then the killing of our babies could remain the law of the land for generations to come. As Christians, we need to examine the ethical values of our presidential candidates.

President Bush is on record as opposing Roe v. Wade, and favoring its repeal, and he has already authorized a ban on partial-birth abortion.

Kerry is on record as favoring Roe v. Wade. In an interview, Kerry says, he believes life begins at conception. Now this is a dilemma - if one believes a fetus is a human life – then abortion is murder. Is this what they call a Kerry flip-flop?

The Bible is not unclear about when life begins. In Psalm 139:16, for example, we are told: "your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be" (NIV translation).

Everything God does has a purpose. We may not always understand the purpose, but He always has a purpose.

In Jeremiah 1:5, for example, God said to the prophet, Jeremiah, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

SO EVERYTIME SOMEONE ABORTS A FETUS - HE IS ABORTING A PERSON KNOWN TO GOD. Why did John the Baptist, who was a six month fetus, leap in his mother's womb, when his mother Elizabeth was greeted by Mary? (Read Luke 4:41). Why? Because John, as a six-month-old fetus, was already a living human being. There are at least twenty scriptures in the Bible that are in opposition to the underlying premise of abortion.

The choice before Christians is a life or death choice for generations to come.

The next occupant of the Oval Office will set the ethical standard of America for the next four years. Ethically the choice for Christians is a matter of life and death for millions of babies, possibly for generations to come.

I believe life begins at conception. If the normal process is uninterrupted, life comes out of the womb, a normal human being.

If you call yourself a Christian, whether Republican or Democrat, then prove it! Vote for life!
